How to stay productive
7 tips to be more productive
10 ways to fight procrastination
I bet you’ve read so many articles like that.
And yet most of us are not the epitome of productivity, right?
Well, here’s why:
We’re all different. So you may read a list of productivity tips by a certain blogger, or even by myself, but maybe these tips fit a certain type of person but not you. For example, I’m a morning person so these are my golden hours. But maybe you’re a night owl. Maybe as the black screen covers your window and the crickets start chirping away, you become a multi-tasking genie…
So here’s the deal:
I’m going to share with you how a successful and productive day of mine looks like. Hey, maybe you can pick a nugget or two from that!
Steve Pavlina recommends allocating continuous block of 3 hours for a serious creative task, preferably closer to 6 hours. The reason being that once you’re in the flow and you’re doing something you love you won’t feel the passage of time. I’m experiencing the same. I’m a workaholic and I enjoy what I do so I can keep going for hours… Can you?
Do I always stick to this schedule?
No. In fact I’m pretty bad, but I’m getting better.
But you know what?
Even if you don’t follow your own schedule down to the T, it will still give you a certain structure so you don’t get lost. When you work for yourself and you’re at home all day, it’s way too easy to get lost and to end up procrastinating. Trust me!
So here goes…
06:07 Wake up, get ready, take a shower
I’m now trying to get up at 05:00 each morning, but let me tell you, it’s not easy. The benefits are huge though. If you’re a morning person you could create before 09:00 what you normally do in your whole day. In the few times I’ve managed to wake up so early I was feeling this energy, this bliss I can’t explain. And I’d like to feel it again.
And yes, it does mean going to sleep earlier…
06:40 Have breakfast
I normally have 2 slices of toasted whole bread with tahini and honey, and then porridge with honey and some coconut and banana if I can get. Oh, and I drink nescafe, no milk. I’m a bit crazy, I know I like watching a video if I have something interesting at hand, mostly marketing or personal development related.
07:00 Self empowerment
I’ve got a folder called Mindset Gems with all sorts of goodies, like songs I like to hear, videos I like to watch and the Prosperity Prayer which I try not to skip. (You can find the free download on my Success List here).
07:20 Start work
Now here are a few things which really help:
You need to build momentum. I believe that the first 2 hours or so in your day will dictate the rest of your day. That’s, at least, how it works for me. So if I drag and start watching YouTube or playing around with Facebook for too long then the day is doomed. So in order to make it successful remember to
- Turn on the right music and keep it going
- Minimize distractions like phone, Skype, emails etc.
- Have only the applications you need open on your screen
- Have a clean and tidy desktop and workspace
- Have food pre-made so you’re not distracted by hunger during work
Well that’s for another article but you get the idea…
Around 15:00 Rest
Well that’s really individual but I get drowsy around these hours. I try to avoid these naps but the way I see it now is that if something works against your productivity then it’s better to deal with it straight away. So I might lose an hour or even 2 in exchange for another 4 or 5 productive hours in the evening.
It’s another cuppa and back to work. Now the evening hours will be less productive for me, I’m a morning person. But I think I have more inspiration during the evening, you know, you get the sunset over the mountains and the muse kicks in. And it’s quieter so you’re less likely to go insane by uninspiring noises such as the infamous leaf blower, wall drilling or your neighbor shouting.
20:30 Work out
I’m following a workout program which I bought online a few months ago. Basically it means I need to work out for about 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week. I’ve got to say that for me, as I’m not working anywhere else right now and my work is pretty much stationary, working out saves the day. It helps me focus, feel good with myself, feel energized and easily get through the day. I encourage you to work out on a regular basis, morning or evening, whatever works best for you. I’m actually going to try switching to mornings as I’m less likely to put it off if I ‘get rid of it’ first thing in the morning. Also doing it in the morning will keep you energized for the rest of the day so you can be more creative.
21:30 Free time
Well, in order to retain your sanity you’ve got to have some fun right? Well, I use this time for phone calls to friends, browsing the Web if there’s anything interesting, sometimes I’d take a walk here (it’s pretty small here so the longest walk would be about 15 minutes), social media, stumbling, maybe some reading…
23:30 Go to sleep
I’ve got to be honest here. Yes, this is my target sleeping hour. No, normally I don’t stick to it. It’s pretty hard but I’m slowly adapting to it. But you know what? Even if you aim for 23:30 and you go to sleep at midnight, that’s good too. As long as you don’t get into the range of 01:00 and later than that you’ll do OK if you’re a morning person. But the earliest you go to bed – the earliest you’re up the next day. No games here, trust me…
Now you may have noticed that I’ve skipped lunch breaks, dinner etc. Well the reason is that as part of my exercise program I have changed my eating habits and I eat small portions more than 3 times per day. These are also short breaks where I would read a PDF or watch a video if I’ve got something interesting or just sit outside and enjoy the sun and the wind if the weather is nice. I will write articles on nutrition but one tip I can give now is to have something healthy to nibble at hand, like raw cashews, whole nuts and small fruit like plums, apples and bananas. Whenever you feel that hunger sets in you can grab one of these and keep going for a little longer…
